Purpose: This study was attempted to investigate the status of nursing activities in neurological intensive care unit according to DNR decision types.
Methods: medical records about nursing activities of 30 nurses according to DNR decision-making process of 26 DNR subjects In D university hospital neurological intensive care unit in Busan from August 1, 2008 to July31, 2009,
Results: 4 types of progress were classified until a consent of DNR was written: family requested to discontinue treatment without discussion with their doctor; patients condition was suddenly worsened; although discussed about DNR, they did not agree with the range of treatment; DNR agreement was made at admission. In this process, we found that nurses reported patient`s condition and delivered family`s hope to doctor, proposed to agree with DNR, provided information about patient`s condition and education to family, and advocated family`s position.
Conclusion: We found that nurses performed the role of communicator, proponent, educator, and advocator until doctor and family wrote a consent of DNR.
